New Year, New Why for Teams—Articulate Your Why to Motivate Action / by Marissa Feinberg

Dear colleagues and friends,

Happy New Year! As I reflect on 2023, I appreciate you for being a part of my community and reading my occasional notes about ways to engage with a variety of opportunities and subjects, from health and impact to events and storytelling.

One of my 2022 highlights was working with Chris Schembra, bestselling author of Gratitude Through Hard Times and Founder of 747Club, facilitating virtual gratitude experiences. In partnership with Chris, I facilitated an Articulate Your Why workshop for Johnson & Johnson MedTech's internal sales team.

Through this experience, the Triple Bottom Why formula evolved—it aligns a team member's Why with their organization and audience, highlighting values and supporting the triple bottom line: people, planet, and profit. For their team, the following elements were added:

  • Challenge - Sharing an understanding of your audience's challenges, demonstrating greater empathy

  • Differentiation - Sharing how your approach is different, strengthening their ability to overcome such obstacles

  • Why Now - Identifying the timely reason for working together, inspiring motivation and urgency to take action
